Introduction:

All printing and creation of electronic format DCD, DRPPR, and coversheets is now done in PDF format created by the server. It is no longer necessary to have Adobe Acrobat PDF creation software installed on you system o create these electronic formats. Acrobat Reader however (or an equivalent program such as ghostview) is still required for viewing PDF files. (Free Acrobat Reader download and installation vailable from Adobe: http://www.adobe.com)

Browser Notes:

  • It is no longer necessary to modify your browser print options headers, dates, etc. This is now entirely under the control of Acrobat Reader.
  • Download Acrobat Reader from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
  • To access PIMT and to display and print PDF files we strongly recommended that you use either Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 service pack #2 or ter) on Windows 2000 or more recent. Or you can use Mozilla FireFox 1.0.6 or a later version on Windows, Linux and Apple MacIntosh systems.

Acrobat Notes:

  • After installation of Acrobat Reader PDF files can be viewed directly in your browser. Or optionally you can specify that you want your browser to promot to Save or Open.
  • Click File Save As ... to create a file containing the DCD, DRPPR or cover sheet files.
  • If you already have the full PDF creation version 6 or later of Acrobat nstalled then it is not necessary to install a new version of Acrobat Reader - but it might be a good idea anyway.
  • The full version of Acrobat PDF creation software is required in order to add the PDF electronic format DCD pages to any existing PDF format document.

Printer Notes:

Printing options are specific to the installed printer and printer drivers, so the following are generic instructions and may not match exactly with your selections.

  • Different printers may have different print offset or page margin widths specified. These may require individual adjustment.
  • For the best printing results of the borders select "Print", then "Properties", then "Graphics", and select "Fine".

Displaying Document Covers

In the same way as the DCD can be included into a PDF format document, a DRDC Document cover can also be created. See Notes on Making Document Covers for complete instructions.

Both the Title and Authors field on the PIMT will retain line breaks and special formatting (see below). For example, a long list of authors can be input as:

John Smith1, John Smith2, and John Smith3
or
John Smith1, John Smith2, and <ENTER>
John Smith3

on the PIMT and this is how it will appear on the Document Cover display.

Another example of how the field can be formatted using the HTML characters noted below would be this:

John Smith1, John Smith2 <ENTER>
<i>Defence R & D Canada - Suffield</i> <ENTER>
John Smith3, <ENTER>
<i>University of Suffield at Ralston</i>

to produce this:

John Smith1, John Smith2
Defence R & D Canada - Suffield
John Smith3,
University of Suffield at Ralston

Titles may also be formatted, such as this:

<b>Human Factors Integration Requirements for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs).</b> <ENTER>
<i>Part II: A Review of The Human Systems Integration Material Available for Armour Systems SORs and a Plan for Future HSI and R&D</i> <ENTER>
Volume 3, Annex Q-V

to produce this:

Human Factors Integration Requirements for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs).
Part II: A Review of The Human Systems Integration Material Available for Armour Systems SORs and a Plan for Future HSI and R&D
Volume 3, Annex Q-V

NOTE: The above presents wrap-around text for the size of the box shown. Display on the DRDC Document Covers will vary but can be forced by the Enter key.

Special Characters

When cutting and pasting text into the PIMT form, some formatting maybe lost between the word processor and the rendering of individual browsers.

To retain superscripts and subscripts in the record, one must markup the required text with HTML (HyperText Markup Language) tags.

The tags, which require both opening and closing are and for superscripts and and for subscripts.

Text must be marked as this To appear as this
H2O H2O
E = mc<sup>2</sup> E = mc2

Should authors wish other formatting to appear in abstracts or titles:

Text must be marked as this To appear as this
<i>Italicized text2</i> Italicized text
<b>Bolded text2</b> Bolded text
<u>Underlined text2</u> Underlined text
<tt>Teletype text2</tt> Teletype text
<code>Computer code2</code> Computer code

DRDKIM can help with the required mark-up for other special characters

Getting the best printouts of the DCD and DRPPR

A new option has been added to printing to allow back-to-back printing of a paper copy of the DCDs.

  1. Make sure your printer CAN print two sided.
  2. Once you select "Two-sided printing" you'll have to find where in the printer options you can tell it to print double-sided.
Some printer coptions call it "Duplex" and ask you to select "On" or "Long side", etc. Easiest way to confirm this is to ask you local technical support.

Assuming you are at a PC with the Adobe Acrobat software installed, the following steps will produce a paper copy of the DCD as DRDKIM designed it. Note that the suggestions above, i.e. not printing headers, zeroing margins, etc. will produce different output than originally intended if not followed.

To get the best hardcopies of the DCD from the PIMT:

  1. Select "To Print or Display a Document Control Sheet (DCD), Document Review Panel Publication Record (DRPPR) or Document Cover"
  2. Select "DCD Page 1" for the record of interest.
  3. When the page is displayed, select the "Print" icon from the Acrobat viewer.
  4. To save a file, click the "File/floppy disk" icon in the Acrobat viewer window.
  5. Provide a file name to the "Save PDF File As", e.g. "dcd1.pdf" and select "Save"
  6. Select the browsers "Back" button.
  7. Select "DCD Page 2"
  8. Repeat Step 3.
  9. Repeat Step 4.
  10. Provide a file name to the "Save PDF File As", e.g. "dcd2.pdf" and select "Save"
  11. Find "dcd1.pdf" wherever you saved it and double-click on it and it will open in Acrobat.
  12. Select "Document" from the top toolbar, then "Insert Pages".
  13. Highlight "dcd2.pdf" wherever you saved it and from the "Select File To Insert" popup, select "Open".
  14. From the "Insert" popup, select "After" from the dropdown box, and select the radio button for "Page number 1 of 1".
  15. Select "OK"
  16. You can save the file, rename to reflect its' two pages rather than one, etc. if you wish.
  17. Select "File", then "Print" and select how your particular printer does double-sided printing. (This will vary; if you are unsure contact your local computer or network support staff.) By way, of example, mine is by selecting "Properties" and selecting "Long Edge" under the "Duplex" option.

The file created at 16 above can be inserted into the PDF of the document using the same steps as 11 to 16 above substituting the real file names, of course. A double-sided DRPPR can be produced in the same manner as the above.
